Center for English as a Second Language (CESL)

The Center for English as a Second Language provides courses to develop students' English language proficiency so that they can succeed in their academic programs and function effectively and creditably in their employment.

The Center provides two kinds of courses:

  • Intensive English Courses

These courses are for students who have not yet completed English proficiency requirements for entry in the University's academic programs. Students are placed into the appropriate level of the Intensive English program according to their results in the University's placement test. Courses are one semester (15 weeks) in length, and are held either in the daytime or in the evening.

As of September 2007 the Intensive English course will focus primarily on preparing students to take the ITP TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), but the courses will also help students develop the skills in English that they will need in their academic programs at the University.

  • Academic English Courses

These courses (English I, English II and English for Special Purposes) are taken by students after they have completed the English proficiency requirements for entry in to academic programs. They are intended to develop further the skills required to function in an English-medium academic environment.

English I and English II focus on developing advanced reading and writing skills, while English for Special Purposes provides a foundation in workplace communication skills specific to a particular discipline (IT or Business, depending on the student's program).
