Overview
Haris M. Khalid (SMIEEE, FHEA, World’s Top 2% Scientist in Energy) received the B.Sc. (Hons.) degree from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan, in 2007, and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, in 2009 and 2012, respectively, all in Mechatronics and Control Systems Engineering.
From 2023 to the present, he has been a promoted Associate Professor in the College of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Dubai (UD), Academic City, Dubai, UAE. From 2022 to the present, he is also a Visiting Senior Researcher with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), South Africa. From 2019–2022, he was an Energy Specialist Consultant to the UAE Space Agency (UAESA) and NanoRacks for “Tests in Orbits”-themed space projects. From 2016–2022, he was an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) – Sharjah Campuses. He has also worked as a postdoctoral researcher, visiting scholar, and research fellow with KFUPM, Masdar Institute, and Petroleum Institute from 2012–2013, 2013–2016, and 2015–2016, respectively.
He has authored/co-authored more than 130 peer-reviewed journal publications and Conference Proceedings. This also includes two textbooks and one monograph. He has an author-level metric (h-index) and research-impact metric (i10-index) of 32 and 65, respectively. He has won research grants of 1.7+ million USD towards research, development, and start-up ventures. His research interests include power systems, cyber-attacks, renewable energy integration, energy storage systems, electric vehicles, transportation electrification, signal processing, machine learning and AI, IoT, and fault diagnostics.
He is also listed in the World's Top 2% Scientists Ranking, compiled by Stanford University and Elsevier Data Repository (Version 8, 2025 Update). Moreover, he has won several research driven awards, the prominent ones of these are Excellence in Research Award at University of Dubai (May 2025), Outstanding Research Output Award at University of Dubai (May 2025), WIRF Grant Award at University of Sharjah (February 2025), Director’s Award at Higher Colleges of Technology – Sharjah Campuses (June 2023), Energy Expert at Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, United Arab Emirates (February 2023), Best Researcher Award at Higher Colleges of Technology – System Wide (January 2022 and December 2019), Start-up Champion at Higher Colleges of Technology – System Wide (January 2022), and Best Paper Award at IEEE CASE, Canada (May 2010), respectively.
Dr. Khalid is currently the Associate and Topic Editor of Frontiers in Energy Research | Smart Grid, Associate Editor of IET Renewable Power Generation, Springer - Evolutionary Intelligence, Springer – Energy Systems, Elsevier – Sustainable Computing: Informatics and Systems, and Elsevier – Franklin Open. He is also the Guest Editor of Special Issues with Elsevier, Springer Nature, and MDPI. He is also a reviewer for several journals published by IEEE, IET, Elsevier, Wiley, Springer, and MDPI. He is on the editorial board of NEOM, IEEE ISGT, ASET, and ICITM. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Fellow of Advance HE UK.
