Dr. Abigail Casten Copiaco

Dr. Abigail Copiaco obtained her Ph.D. in December 2021 in the Signal Processing, Neural Networks, and Machine Learning fields at the University of Wollongong (UOW), Australia, garnering the “Examiners’ Commendation Award for Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis”. Prior to this, she obtained her BEng (First Class Hons.) in Electrical Engineering from UOW Dubai in June 2017, finishing as the Top Graduate of her batch. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Dubai (UD), and the Treasurer for the IEEE UAE Section. Alongside this, she is also an active researcher working on international collaborative R&D projects in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, and Signal and Image Processing for various applications, including healthcare, sustainability, and cybersecurity. Abigail has over 6 years of experience teaching Electrical, Computer, and Telecommunications engineering subjects at UOWD and UD. Passionate about teaching and research, she has co-authored over 25 publications and has received multiple research awards, including winning the Best Paper award for two years in a row from a reputable conference. Within the duration of her career as an academic, she has received consistent top evaluation ratings, and several awards including: Teaching Excellence Award - Highly Commended in 2019, Teaching Excellence Award - Winner in 2020, along with nominations for Passion and Research Excellence Awards in 2020 from UOWD. Further, she has also conducted activities in collaboration with industry companies and is heavily involved in teaching community workshops aimed at early Engineering students. As a strong believer in continuous professional development, she acquired two teaching certifications from Swinburne University, and certifications in Artificial Intelligence and Enterprise Design Thinking with IBM.
