Overview
Dr. Damien Carberry has diverse and extensive background in education. He holds a PhD in Arts, specializing in History (Social and Cultural), and possesses a Post Graduate Diploma in Adult and Community Education, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Sociology.
Throughout his academic journey, Dr. Carberry has held various positions, contributing significantly to the field of education. Currently, he serves as a Senior Lecturer for the General Undergraduate Curriculum Requirements Department at the University of Dubai. In this role, he takes charge of designing and delivering modules covering a wide range of subjects, including English language, Communication Skills, Tourism in Contemporary Society, and Sociology and Society, Psychology and Society.
His academic journey has also taken him to Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, where he worked as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Humanities and Social Sciences. During his tenure, he was responsible for the design and delivery of academic courses spanning subjects such as World History, History of the Modern Middle East, Politics of Identity, Twentieth Century History, and Gender, War and Remembrance.
Dr. Damien’s role as an educator extends to his time at the Higher Colleges of Technology, where he served as an Assistant Professor in General Studies. Here, he designed and delivered a diverse range of modules, including Academic Reading and Writing, Academic Spoken Communications, English for Business, History of the Gulf and Middle East, Globalization and the GCC, Intercultural Studies, Academic Research Methods, and Life and Study Skills.
In Ireland, he served as Team Leader in the English Department at Wheatfield Place of Detention. He facilitated various Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) modules, including Communications, Social Studies, Media Analysis, Personal Effectiveness, Living in a Diverse Society, Study Skills, and Parenting. Additionally, he taught Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate History and Civil, Social, and Political Education (CSPE) using the National Secondary School Curriculum of Ireland.
Dr. Carberry's contribution to academia is further evident through his role as an Associate Lecturer at Maynooth University in Ireland, where he contributed to the Department of Adult and Community Education and the Department of History. He played key roles in curriculum development and delivery, thesis supervision, and module design.
His research interests are diverse, encompassing the Psychology of Adult and Higher Education, Philosophy of Adult and Higher Education, Teaching and Learning in Adult and Higher Education, Gender Studies, Cultural and Social History, Society and Culture, Education in Prisons, and the Role of Emotion in History, Society, and Culture.
Dr. Damien Robert Carberry has also contributed to academia through publications, including a discussion on the intersection of Masculinities, Attachment Theory, and Transformative Learning published in the Journal of Prison Education and Reentry.
